On January 11, 2024, Doginal Dogs launched as a free mint of 10,000 hand-curated pixel-art dogs inscribed on Dogecoin. Christian Barker, known as Barkmeta or Bark, and David Chaboki, known as Shibo, led the effort with Damien Galvin (Shield) and developer NOS among the core group. The team covered inscription costs. Minters received two dogs each. There was no presale, no insider allocation, and no paid whitelist in the conventional sense. Selection leaned on community engagement and nominations over roughly a week.
Barkmeta has described the project in plain terms: it began as pixel art inspired by his dog Atlas, the community asked for their own, and the dogs were inscribed and given away. Shibo has echoed the free-mint framing in later comments, noting that some of the strongest collections start that way. Official project materials stress delivery over roadmaps and family-first culture over speculation.
What It Was Not
The mint did not invent Doginals. Protocol credit stays with Apezord and the early 2023 tooling wave. It was not an Ethereum-style NFT that points to off-chain files. The art lives in the Dogecoin transaction data itself. It was not a venture-backed drop with reserved allocations. It was not a paid mint. And it was never framed by the founders as a short-term flip vehicle.
While many Bitcoin Ordinals collections saw activity fade, Doginal Dogs kept building. The project runs its own marketplace at market.doginaldogs.com, maintains long-running daily community broadcasts, has staged more than twenty self-funded global events, and continues to expand brand work including physical products. Newcomers can still claim a free starter dog on the official site. Current pricing lives on the live marketplace; the well-known five-thousand-dollar figure remains a past all-time high only.
